How Prenatal Yoga Will Better Your Child

Study after study has proved that yoga comes with many benefits for your physical and mental health — both when you’re pregnant and when you’re not. But did you know that prenatal yoga also brings many wellness benefits to your baby?

At Kelly Morales OB/GYN, we know the powerful ally that prenatal yoga can be for our expectant mothers and their babies. Dr. Kelly Morales and our care team work hard to help women in San Antonio, Texas, have a safe and happy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

As part of our holistic menu of pregnancy services, our in-house yoga studio, House of RhythOM, offers prenatal yoga classes to benefit both mama and baby. With our expert guidance, you’ll get the tools you need to prepare for labor and recovery from childbirth.

We’ve curated this informative guide to help you understand how prenatal yoga will better your child.

Getting baby in the right place

Your body goes through a lot during labor and delivery — but so does your baby. Being in the right position can help your baby experience less stress.

For example, the Left Occiput Anterior (LOA) position of your baby during labor is commonly believed to be one of the best positions for delivery. In LOA, your baby faces your back between your right hip and spine. This helps your baby fit most easily through the birth canal.

While the best position for your baby may vary depending on the shape of your pelvis, prenatal yoga can help move your baby into the right position. Your baby’s head and spine are the heaviest parts of the body. Certain yoga postures can use this weight to help move your baby into the best place for an easier delivery for both of you.

Healthy pregnancy, healthy baby

The more healthy your pregnancy, the better the odds are that your baby will be healthy, too. By engaging in healthy activities, like prenatal yoga, you can improve your health and the health of your baby.

A scientific review of recent prenatal yoga studies found that prenatal yoga improves your baby’s birth weight while decreasing the risk of complications, like preterm labor and pre-eclampsia.

Building the mother-baby connection

Prenatal yoga classes provide a quiet, safe place to connect physically and emotionally with your growing baby. By taking time once or twice a week to focus on the two of you, you’re creating a special time of mother-baby bonding

What’s more? As your body and baby change together, your response during different yoga poses is a reminder to pay attention and celebrate these changes. Prenatal yoga gives you the time and space to focus on your connection to your baby, helping your baby feel more connected to you in return.
